Glendale CPA | IRS Notice?
Nobody likes to get mail from the IRS, but each year millions of notices and letters are received by taxpayers each year. Here are a few tips for what to do if you receive correspondence from the IRS.
- First off, don’t panic. Most notices can be taken care of with a simple response.
- Read the notice carefully. Most correspondence from the IRS will be about your federal tax return or tax account. It will be about a specific issue such as a change to your return. It may ask for more information but it could also explain that you owe additional income tax that may be due. Make sure you read the instructions carefully.
- The notice may also state that the IRS has made a change or correction to your return. When you read the notice, compare the changes made to the original return.
- If you agree with the notice, you most likely don’t need to respond with anything other than payment.
- If you do not agree with the notice, it is imperative that you respond quickly. You should write a letter explaining why you disagree with the notice. Be sure to include any information the IRS might need to consider. Mail your response with the bottom portion of the notice to the address listed on the top left corner of the notice. Allow at least 30 days for a response.
- You won’t need to call the IRS for most notices. If you have questions, feel free to call the phone number on the notice.
- Keep a copy of the notice for your records.
- Contact your CPA should you require more assistance with a notice.
